When it comes to your feelings, you'd be amazed how often we misidentify what is actually coming up within our emotional world.
Self Awareness of Feelings
Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness of feelings. Emotions = energy in motion. Feelings are the energy coming to the surface for us to witness and give a name.
Let me tell you, it's soooo empowering to be able to name what's coming up for you. With a deeper and (as close to) accurate understanding of what you are feeling, you empower yourself to:
be better able to create space for and honor your feelings without judgment
address and resolve, if necessary, the source that is triggering any feelings you are witnessing
deepen your connection with others or let them truly see and connect with you
The Center for Nonviolent Communication created this comprehensive, but not exhaustive, list of words that I offer to my clients when we work on building emotional vocabulary & awareness.
Three Important Things to Note
Experiencing a desired feeling is influenced by your present needs. The list names feelings when needs are met/satisfies and when not. This is KEY! Typically, we experience more constructive feelings when our needs are clear and being met. Take a step back, assess your needs and how they match up with your current feelings.
Feelings are information. It’s natural to experience frustration, disappointment, or confusion. The goal isn’t to suppress them but to get curious—what are they telling you?
Feelings / emotional states are meant to flow. Choose to let it all come up and flow through you. They aren't mementos to hold onto. Keep them moving.
Download the list below and keep it handy!
